Mark Smith produces 270 000 free-range eggs a month on Maralou Farm near East London. Unable to compete on price with eggs produced in battery cage operations, he focuses on offering customers the best quality eggs and service. Mike Burgess reports. “I can’t compete on price because free-range birds eat 30% more feed than caged birds, but in terms of quality and service, I have a good shot at [success]. I’ve seen it over and over again that people might go elsewhere, but return because of good service and quality.’’ Mark experimented with broilers and caged layers, but admits he shied away from the intensive nature of these operations. He decided to produce free-range eggs despite the increased costs and associated niche market realities. Mark’s interest in chickens stems from his late father, Edwin, who first worked for Rainbow Chicken in East London before moving to a smallholding near the Nahoon Dam in 1989. When Olivetti debuted this typewriter-sized marvel in 1965 at a business convention in New York City, people were in absolute awe that this tiny, self-contained unit could perform the same types of functions as the hulking room-sized mainframes of the time. Some were sure that it was simply a small input device for a much bigger machine hiding behind the curtain. But the revolutionary Olivetti Programma 101 was no joke. It performed standard four-banger operations and could handle square root and absolute value calculations. The Olivetti had 16 jump instructions as well as 16 conditional jump instructions, which put it firmly in state machine territory. TruLive3D Imager from company’s Luxendo subsidiary allows analysis of organoids in natural environments. The Luxendo TruLive3D has been optimized for fast 3D multi-sample imaging of delicate live specimens in their native 3D environment, according to the company. It was unveiled at the 2019 joint meeting of the American Society for Cell Biology and European Molecular Biology Organization in Washington DC. Luxendo states that the system is especially suited for multi-position imaging of small embryos, 3D spheroids and oocytes, enabling time-lapse, high-throughput imaging experiments. “Our new TruLive3D imager now enables imaging biology in its native environment without compromising resolution and imaging speed or worrying about photo-toxicity,” commented Lars Hufnagel from Bruker’s Luxendo business.
