Belco Industries cuts component cutting time with high-powered fiber laser

Shops involved with metal finishing and aluminum extrusion deserve, and may need, equipment built specifically to enhance each of their unique production environments. Sixty years ago Belco Industries, Belding, Mich., saw how it could help finishing and extrusion companies increase production by engineering, building, and installing systems that are still anything but one-size-fits-all. Custom washers, ovens, spray paint booths, and air makeup units are included in the custom finishing lines. Billet and log heaters, furnaces, handling systems, log saws, pullers, air quench systems, and die and age ovens are part of the aluminum extrusion lines. To produce the components that comprise the custom-designed systems, Belco’s own shop floor needs to provide a variety of part sizes and shapes, manage several material types and thicknesses, and frequently meet tight deadlines. “We are an OEM, but it’s not like we run the same parts over and over. Once a sale is made, we design the system and produce parts that are unique to that system,” said Chris Stewart, manufacturing engineer. “And we don’t just cut components for our own products and in-house use. Since new equipment cuts so ...

Butterfly Valve, Gate Valve, ...

TRENDING:        Ayanna Pressley       Music festival canceled       Kevin Spacey       Michelle Carter       Pizza festival      Mayflower II Three of the world’s most venerated alpine climbers are believed to have perished in Canada’s Rocky Mountains after an avalanche cascaded down the mountain they were scaling amid a daring expedition, Canadian officials said Thursday. The apparent loss has left the global climbing community devastated as the likelihood they are still alive has slowly diminished. The missing climbers, who were ascending Howse Peak in Banff National Park, have been identified as Jess Roskelley, 36, from Spokane, Washington, son of legendary mountaineer John Roskelley; and David Lama, 28, and Hansjörg Auer, 35, both of Austria. All three were part of the North Face Global Athlete Team, the outdoor apparel company said. “Based on the assessment of the scene, all three members of the party are presumed to be deceased,” Parks Canada, the country’s national parks department, said in a statement Thursday. Authorities have not been able to launch a recovery mission, however, “due to additional avalanches and dangerous conditions at the scene.” John Roskelley told ...

Northwest Indiana medical lab installs ‘transformational’ technology | Health Care

Dr. Elisabeth Shearon, of Alverno Laboratories, reviews slide samples of blood, skin and bone that have been scanned into the company’s system. Alverno, which does medical testing and diagnosing for many local hospitals and physicians, recently installed digital pathology that scans patient samples, creating images that are then available to doctors through an online server. This allows doctors to do their work faster and from anywhere. Sam Terese, president and CEO of Alverno Laboratories, left, and Brian Wellborn, manager of anatomic pathology, stand near some of the eight new digital pathology scanners the lab uses to scan patients’ blood, skin and bone samples. The flavor on the cusp of food trends adds richness, roundness and craveability to everything from

The flavor on the cusp of food trends adds richness, roundness and craveability to everything from meat and salad dressing to chocolate mousse. Kokumi, a Japanese word, roughly translates to “rich taste” or “delicious,” depending on who you ask. While some consider it to be the sixth taste, this flavor enhancer serves a more important purpose. Kokumi adds craveability. “It’s a taste sensation,” Nicole Warren told Food Dive. She’s the PR and marketing supervisor for Ajinomoto, the Japanese flavor company that first isolated kokumi compounds in the 1980s. “It creates this roundness you never knew you wanted unless you tasted it.” Kokumi is predominantly found in the realm of Japanese cuisine, where its taste sensation occurs naturally in fermented foods like alcohol, soy sauce, fish sauces and shrimp paste. The items that cause that feeling have been isolated at the protein level and concentrated into a powder compound by Ajinomoto Co. That compound can then be added to fresh and packaged foods to increase the feel of flavors in the mouth. Despite having an identifiable effect, kokumi has a nebulous definition. As a component of taste, it is a sensation scientists have had ...

An Engineer’s Guide to Laser Cutting > ENGINEERING.com

YPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd”> 1967 had the Summer of Love, Thurgood Marshall’s confirmation to the Supreme Court and—if you’re a hockey fan—it was the last time the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup. There was also no shortage of engineering news in 1967, including the Apollo 1 disaster, the Saturn V rocket’s first launch and the Concorde’s debut. Here’s another event from 1967 that was arguably just as important but didn’t get nearly as much press: Peter Houldcroft, then Deputy Scientific Director at The Welding Institute in Cambridge, UK began his experiments using an oxygen assist gas to cut a 1mm-thick steel sheet with a 300W CO2 laser. This marked the beginning of using lasers for industrial material processing. Now, 50 years later, laser cutting machines account for the largest segment of the metal cutting machine market, which also includes plasma, waterjet and mechanical cutting. In the simplest terms, a CNC laser cutter uses a coherent beam of light to cut material, most often sheet metal, but also wood, diamond, glass, plastics and silicon. Broadly spe...

WATCH: ‘Trump’s Tanks’ Arrive In Washington For July 4th; MSNBC Considers Blackout

*Internal promotions, recommended content, and ads that enhance the user experience may still be included on the site. For what Politico has styled “Trump’s takeover of the Fourth of July celebration,” the U.S. Military brought a couple of M1 Bradley Armored Personnel Carriers into the heart of Washington, D.C. Tuesday night, a moment HuffPost described as a “surreal scene” and footage of which has been posted online. The tanks are among the half-dozen or so military vehicles that will be included in the “Salute to America” event around the Lincoln Memorial, which will also feature the standard fireworks and flyover — and for which Trump has been decried by the Left for his “authoritarian” display of military power. “In a surreal scene, tanks rolled into Washington D.C. on Tuesday to participate in President Donald Trump’s Independence Day event,” HuffPost reported Tuesday in a piece highlighting some of the footage as well as comments by Army Col. Sunset Belinsky to a Washington-based CBS affiliate reassuring the public that there’s no need to “panic.” “Residents of the Capitol City will s...

Can marijuana be grown as effectively under LED lighting and proper climate control rather than energy-sucking

Can marijuana be grown as effectively under LED lighting and proper climate control rather than energy-sucking heat lamps? Heavens, it’s a big week for pot questions. Why just the other day I answered a query about whether it’s safe to use plastic soil beads in potted plants, and now this. Thanks for keeping the theme alive. Marijuana aficionados stereotypically feel a deep and abiding connection with the natural world, or so I hear. So stereotypically, I’d expect it would harsh their mell to know what a whopping energy footprint their buds have. Pot may look like an oh-so-natural herb, but until recently the illegal nature of it has meant not much grew outdoors, kissed by sunlight and light breezes. Instead, as you note, most crops have been raised indoors, under enormously energy-intensive and inefficient lamps. The good news is there are indeed ways the indoor-weed industry can clean up its act, and LED bulbs are a big part of that. But before we get to the solution, a look at the problem. Typically, growing operations use glaringly bright high-pressure sodium, or HPS, lights (metal halide and fluorescents are sometimes involved, too). How bright are we talking? Try 1,000 wat...

Justices turn down mystery corporation in grand-jury dispute

YPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd”> Yesterday Attorney General William Barr sent a summary of the report by Special Counsel Robert Mueller to Congress. Today, the Supreme Court released orders from the justices’ private conference last week and turned down a petition that asked the justices to review a ruling by a lower court holding an unnamed foreign corporation in contempt for failing to provide information requested by a subpoena related to the Mueller investigation. The corporation, which is owned by an unidentified foreign country, had argued that it did not need to provide the information sought by the subpoena because it is immune from lawsuits under the federal Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act and because doing so would cause it to violate the laws of its own country. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit rejected those arguments in December, prompting the corporation to go to the Supreme Court. Chief Justice John Roberts put the lower court’s order requiring the corporation to provide the information or pay penalties on hold temporaril...
